Summary: Penelo helps Fran with a relaxing little ritual.
“Really? You’ve never done this?” Penelo asks, and there is genuine surprise—even skepticism—in her voice. She dips the tiny brush back in the minuscule pot of lacquer, stirs it, and Fran finds she enjoys the sight of the girl’s pleased little smile every time the light catches the subtle sparkles in the color.
Fran tilts her head to the side; her ears twitch at every sound of movement beneath the steady rhythm of the low tide waves. “It seems unnatural,” she comments, and scrunches her nose in confusion when Penelo snorts an unladylike chortle of laughter.
“That’s the point, Fran!” Penelo giggles, holding the Viera’s hand in her palm. “Some of us have to work to feel pretty.”
Fran stretches her fingers awkwardly. “I do not,” she replies—is serious—and understands neither Penelo’s delightful laugh, nor Balthier’s shaking shoulders, when she looks between them.
