Summary: Theo and Marissa just want to make sure it's an actual earthquake. Set in my "Scions of the Tomb" universe.

Marissa looked up as the classroom shook. It was finished after a moment, not enough to duck and cover. There was a tap on her arm, and she looked over to see Theo.

"Mar, was that an earthquake, or...." Theo glanced around, as Marissa did. Even without clarification, she knew what he was asking. Was someone trying to break into the Monument to get to the Gate they guarded? It wasn't impossible.

"Bezonas konkretaroko," she said softly, knowing he'd understand. She couldn't sense anything while she had carpet or formica under her feet. She needed at least concrete, and earth or stone would be better.

He nodded at that, touching the badge under his jacket, just in case. She knew that he was better at the offensive than she was, being their Fire.

At least the alarm was ringing, and Ms. Robinson was calling for the class to follow her and leave the building. She wouldn't be able to concentrate on the earth until she got downstairs.

Once they were outside, and lined up nearly, Marissa was able to concentrate. She mentally reached into the concrete beneath her feet. There was a sense of almost-relief when she touched it, as if part of it had gotten stuck and now was free, like all of its movement had paid off. Nothing had forced anything. It didn't mean there was no threat, but that the earth had not been moved by an outside party.

Theo was looking at her from farther down the line. She smiled at him slightly, shaking her head. No direct threat.

He nodded back. She could see in his eyes clearly that he'd be heading to the Monument as soon as he got away, as would she. Hopefully it would be soon.

She could do nothing but count the minutes and hope everything would be okay.

Interesting stuff - I like the portrayal of the bond between the characters and the secret knowledge they share.
