[#007] Never Silent (Doctor Who)

Theme Prompt: #007: Traveling
Title: Never Silent
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating/Warnings: G; No warnings
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 199

Summary: The old girl may be many things. But silent will never be one of them.

The Doctor closes his eyes and listens. Doesn't say anything; doesn't do anything.

He just...listens.

The TARDIS is abuzz all around him; never is she truly silent. There's always some manner of sound, be it the thrum of the engines, the thwack and tap of various controls, or that beautiful wheeze-groan of landing and takeoff. Even her growls and hiccups and angry noises are music to her Thief's ears.

Silent? No, she's never silent, not even for a moment. The old girl may be many things. But silent will never be one of them. She is a symphony, an opera. In a sense, she is also his dance partner, whirling him from one end of the space-time continuum to the other. She hums in his mind, sings him to sleep.

The Doctor has heard such music in his lives, by the greatest composers who will ever live. He's heard phrases and lyrics that would make a block of granite weep.

But, deep in his hearts, he knows that the TARDIS herself is his favorite song. There can be nothing finer than the way she improvises, and then creates variations on her own themes.

He could listen to her forever.
