[#23] Regret (Gin no Ookami)
Theme Prompt: In For A Penny
Title: Regret
Fandom: Gin no Ookami
Rating/Warnings: Violence
Bonus: Sorta? He gets intentionally misnamed.
Word Count: 505
Summary: Ray made a decision years before that has caught up with him
As Ray cut through the alleys of Paris, he chided himself mentally for allowing this to happen. He could ask how it came to this, but it was his own soft-hearted moment. The moment Michel had opened his eyes and asked that simple, simple question.
There were things he’d never told Michel, things he never planned on Michel learning. That he had been the assassin Jean-Louis hired to kill Michel’s family. That he had passed it off onto another assassin, one who was now Michel’s friend. That he had gone to finish the job, only to find Michel in a coma and take pity on him.
The first and only target he had taken pity on.
The doctor, if one could call him that, hadn’t expected Michel to live, not after that many shots. The trauma had turned his dark hair white while his body healed. And when he finally did awaken, those beautiful, dark eyes had focused on Ray.
“Who am I?”
“I don’t know,” Ray said, lying to Michel for the first of many times. “Do you remember anything?”
“Nothing.”
Nothing. That was good. He could keep Michel alive, hidden away and train him as an assassin. With his silver hair, who would recognize him? And what was the likelihood that the politician from Luxembourg would return to Paris and run into Michel?
“Well, let’s call you Silver, like your hair. When you’re feeling up to it, you can come and work for me, since I have been taking care of you.”
Michel had been reborn as the Silver Wolf, one of Ray’s most feared assassins. And now, these years later, the walls in his mind had broken. He knew who he was, who Ray was, who Jean-Louis was. Michel had killed the politician, and now his men were chasing Michel down. As were the authorities, both Parisian and those from Luxembourg.
But Ray.
Ray arrived first.
“Tonight, the Silver Wolf dies,” he said, not without regret.
Silver had been his friend, his confidant. Perhaps they would have been more in time. Or Ray could have hoped, anyway. As Michel, he only had eyes for his wife; as Silver, he loved no one.
“Are you going to kill me?” Michel’s voice was cold, flat.
Ray aimed his gun at Michel. “Whichever of us dies is the Silver Wolf.”
There would be no pulling back this time, no half-measure granted out of pity. No poorly aimed shot that left its victim alive. And when the shot hit, Ray was surprised. Not that he’d let Michel shoot him, not that it was going to be fatal. But that there was no pain, just the feeling of the wind being knocked out of him and his legs collapsing under him.
And then Michel’s arms were there. What they said to one another mattered little to Ray; Michel was there, staring into his eyes.
Maybe showing mercy hadn’t been such a bad thing.
Not if in the end
It had come like this.

Your characterisations of Ray and Michel feel very solid to me, even with such few words. Good job!

Glad to see you spreading the Silver Wolf love, especially for Michel. I once wrote a Michel/Mireille fic (GASP WHAT TREACHERY), perhaps I'll upload it to ao3 and give you some company.
