[#024] Grape Adventures (Rune Factory 4)

Theme Prompt: Life Hack
Title: Grape Adventures
Fandom: Rune Factory 4
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: No
Word Count: 596
Summary: Lest tries to help Clorica get over her hatred of grapes.

It wasn't the taste of grapes she disliked so much as the peeling and the seeds. And even though she knew it wasn't strange or unusual to have a least favorite food, she'd always admired Lest's ability to like pretty much anything that was served to him. Even Gold Juice, which had a reputation for not being very tasty.

Besides, Clorica thought, he worked so hard to prepare all kinds of dishes and with his skill even things like grape jam and raisin bread could smell nice.

"I want to learn to like grapes," she told her husband at breakfast one morning. It was barely seven and they'd already finished their farming chores, including a particularly large grape harvest. Lest blinked, looking up from his pancakes.

"Why? I didn't think you cared either way."

"I feel like I'm not being fair," Clorica said. "I don't want to hate something just because it's so hard to eat! If only it were easier...if I could get rid of the peel and the seeds faster..." She sighed, stifling a yawn.

"Hm..." Lest looked deep in thought long enough that she wondered if he was about to fall asleep himself, until he snapped his fingers.

"Oh?"

"I think I'm getting an idea, Clori!" He smiled. "You just enjoy your day at work, leave everything to me! Er, that is-"

"It's okay." She smiled. She'd promised when he proposed and on their wedding day that she'd trust him with more from now on. "I have a feeling whatever this idea is, it'll work perfectly."

After all, he'd saved four guardians, taken down an evil overlord who wanted him dead and brought Venti back from beyond without sacrificing himself. Helping her with her silly problem wouldn't be that big of a stretch.

She finished her pancakes, handed Lest his lunch and headed off to meet Vishnal for work, filled with curiosity.

When she came home, he was standing beside a large pile of scrap metal and holding something small out to her.

"Introducing, the Grape-Amatic!" Clorica couldn't help but giggle as she took the tool, studying it. A broken hilt wrapped in a cheap bandage, glued to a blade shard.

"Sweetie, how did you..."

"I didn't have a recipe for it, it took me a lot of tries," Lest chuckled. "But I did it! A grape-peeler and seeder, just for you. Now you can give grapes a fair chance!" A plate of grapes sat on the table, and Clorica sat down, still studying the tool.

"Well...let's see if this helps." She had no doubt the tool itself would work, but if it turned out she didn't like grapes even after all his hard work...taking a deep breath, she picked up a grape and ran the sharp side of the blade along the skin.

It took her less than five seconds to get the skin and the seeds out of the way, and when she popped the fruit into her mouth she was surprised by the juicy sweet and sour flavor. She couldn't say she loved it or hated it, it was just...new.

"It's different from the smell that comes from your grape jam," she said once she'd swallowed. "I'll have to keep trying them to see if I like them or not..." She smiled. "But...at least the Grape-Amatic will make trying them less frustrating!"

"Good." His smile told her he didn't care if her problem was silly or petty, that he'd honestly wanted to help. Lest could be a little easily weirded out and sarcastic at times, but he always went out of his way to help everyone in town.

Especially her.

"Thank you, sweetie," she said as she peeled another grape.
