Title: Worth It

Summary: "I think you enjoy getting your butt kicked by Chrom every few weeks."
"Phew! Thanks, squirt." The ointment stings, but it's nothing he isn't used to. The Vaike is a fighter, he's taken far harder hits than this. Drip, drip, drip it goes down his bicep, the stuff's half-water but it always works. And Lissa's surprisingly gentle for someone with the reputation of a tomboy.
Beside him, Lissa just sighs and rolls her eyes a little.
"You're lucky he wasn't using the Falchion," she chides. "Otherwise you could've lost your entire arm!"
"Hey, now, The Vaike aint made of straw." He smirks. "Chrom's the one who's lucky I wasn't using my best axe! I don't just hold back for anyone, I'm just going easy on him cause you'll start weeping again otherwise."
"Sure you are." Lissa snorts. "All right, now hold still so I can wrap you up..." The usual bandages, they'll come off in a few days as long as he sits still and takes it easy. And he always does because Lissa's one of the few people he submits to.
Can't believe such a tiny girl has that kind of power over a guy like me.
"I'll win next time! Teach is through going easy on Chrom, just cause he's his pal!" Lissa shakes her head, pigtails bobbing from side to side.
"This is what, the fifth time you've said that and still gotten your butt kicked?" Her tone's teasing. "Sometimes I think you enjoy getting yout butt kicked." Vaike feels his face burn as he glares a little at her.
"I do not!"
"Come on, Vaike, you were there when Frederick explained the weapon triangle, but you keep using that axe instead of trying out a sword or something. Chrom's even offered to train you with a sword so you two can be on more equal footing!"
"But who wants that?" Vaike rolled his eyes. "If I can't beat him using a weaker weapon it's not worth it. No pain, no gain, simple as that." Which, he realizes, kind of proves Lissa's point. He's gotten used to the aches and pains every time he loses, even embracing them. He doesn't even mind taking it easy for a day or two while they heal up, it'll be worth it the day he manages to best Chrom.
He expects her to tell him that's stupid, but instead she nods a little.
"Makes sense, I guess. I'm sure Chrom would feel the same way if you used a lance against his sword."
"Exactly! No victory's supposed to be an easy one, especially for a warrior!" He smiles as she finishes with the bandages. She's gotten really cute lately...no, not just cute. Pretty. Gorgeous. He only calls her squirt because they're both used to it...and because she's short, but nothing else about her is a little kid anymore.
And all the more reason to beat Chrom fair and square. Can't have her thinking I got the win cause her brother felt sorry for me!
Lissa helps him up, and Vaike smiles as she leads him to a cot. It's made up with fresh sheets, courtesy of Lissa herself. She hates folding sheets, but she got up early this morning and did it anyway.
It was like she knew he'd be coming in.
Yep. It'll be worth all that pain when she starts looking at me like a hero.
