[#049] And in a Pinch, Sure, They'll Do (Leverage)

Theme Prompt: #049 - Loyalty
Title: And in a Pinch, Sure, They’ll Do
Fandom: Leverage
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 732
Summary: The team finds themselves sidetracked when they spot another player on the board.

“Actually, maybe the sterling silver is more what I had in mind.”

Parker snorts from her place in the van. “Sophie’s never going to let Nate live that one down.”

“What do you mean?” The question is only half-asked, mostly to fill the space with conversation rather than Hardison intently listening. His fingers are flying against the keyboard to make sure everything is still running smoothly.

Parker, on the other hand, is the one with her eyes on the feed from Nate’s button cam. Her sharp eyes scan over each item, assessing and cataloging their value based on her wealth of experience. “None of that is anywhere close to sterling silver. Sophie would be appalled.”

That gets Hardison’s attention, and he looks up from his keyboard with a frown. Nate sends signals that he expects the team to pick up on when he’s talking with a mark on occasion. Picking out the clue in a statement about sterling silver that is not sterling silver is a little more obtuse than most, but he has to try.

“Eliot, do you have eyes on Nate?”

“No. I’m covering Sophie. Should I have eyes on Nate?”

“Not sure yet.”

Parker’s picking up on Hardison’s tension at this point, and her posture shifts from relaxed amusement to genuine concern. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. But that feels more like a clue to me than Nate pretending to be bad at antiques.” The man did work in art for most of his adult life, after all. Hardison taps around, checking the feeds from the nearby security cameras to try and see what Nate might have seen when he finds it. Out of the range of the button cam was a pair of men forced Jim Sterling into the back of a car at gunpoint.

“Uh, guys. Nate’s not taking about sterling silver. He’s talking about Sterling getting kidnapped.” Minutes later, the security feed is being pushed to all their phones.

“Sterling?” Eliot already sounds annoyed. “What’s he doing here?”

“Don’t know, but whatever it was, it’s gone bad.” Nate’s conversation seems to have ended in the meantime, so Hardison gets back to the point. “Nate, what do you want to do here?”

“Did you get the plate of the car?”

“Yes.”

“Can you trace it?”

“Who do you think you’re talking to, exactly?”

“Good. Find it. Eliot, Sophie, change of plans. We’re going to need to get to that location ASAP.”

A long silence comes from the others on the line, before Eliot tentatively responds. “Nate, are we trying to save Sterling here?”

“Does anyone have any better ideas?”
Nate’s met with silence again. “Look, I know Sterling isn’t our favorite person, and he’s a pain in the ass, but do any of us want him dead?” Another long pause of silence meets that statement. “That’s what I thought.”

Sophie speaks first. “So what do we do, Nate?”

“Hardison?”

“The car stopped by an abandoned warehouse on Sixth and Rhodes. How do you want to play this?”

“Eliot and Sophie, get over there and get eyes on it. Hardison and Parker, I need you to find out everything you know about who owns that car and meet us there. I’ll keep the mark busy, just in case he’s involved.”

“You got it.” Hardison shuts off his comm, taking a deep breath as he leans back in his seat.

“Are we doing this?” Parker asks. “Saving Sterling?”

“Looks like.”

“Why are we doing that?”

“Probably because Sterling may be an asshole, but he’s not actually a bad person?” Hardison shrugs. “He and Nate go way back. As much as he doesn’t like the guy, he probably doesn’t want to see him dead?”

“So Nate is doing this because he’s loyal, even though Sterling’s not?”

Hardison shrugs as the two of them move to the front seat of the van to get into position. “I don’t think it’s that simple. But they were friends once. In some weird, old white dude kind of way, I think they still are.”

“So we’re doing this because Sterling is Nate’s friend?”

“It’s the reason that makes the most sense.”

Parker nods again before climbing forward and sliding into the passenger’s seat next to him. “Okay, then. Let’s go steal a Sterling.”

Hardison smirks, before starting up Lucille and heading out of the parking lot. “And let’s just hope we’re not too late.”

Sometimes people have to be rescued just because it's the right thing to do, especially if you have history with them, good or bad. For the sake of what used to be.

Neat banter.

Great take on the prompt! Love the tension and the exchange between a whole bunch of characters that are separated.
