Title: I Felt the Change the Moment You Came

Summary: Maddie gets some bad news on her wedding day.
“Nothing to say?”
She wants to slap him. She should slap him. She should reach across the room and slap him for every minute of silence he lets sit between them, but that’s not going to make her feel any better. Or, at least, she’s trying to convince herself it won’t.
Jason stands there silently, face blank, neither giving her anything to guess his state of mind or any sense of remorse. It’s almost as though he feels nothing at all. How could she not see? How could she have spent all of these years with him and to think he felt anything at all?
She closes her eyes, shaking her head and reaching down for the ring on her finger. “I can’t do this anymore.”
That seems to spark some kind of life into him, and he stumbles forward to try and stop her. “Maddie, don’t—” He tries to take hold of her wrist, but she jerks away from his touch. He tries again, and she gives in to the urge and slaps him across the face.
The smack! echoes through the room, loud and echoing, and Jason recoils, eyes wide in surprise. She doubts he saw it coming, Maddie’s never raised a hand to anyone in her life, let alone him. Her hand throbs from the force, palm prickling as if being stuck with tiny needles.
“You did this!” All the rage and sadness welling inside her bursts out. It’s the first real outburst of emotion since he broke the news: he had been with someone else, and he waited until their wedding to come clean. “I can’t believe you did this. To me. God, are you even sorry at all?”
More silence. Jason’s hand leaves his cheek, revealing the bright red splotch where she had struck him. “Would you have rather I waited until after we were married?”
A bitter, unhinged laugh bursts from her, and she sinks into a nearby chair, burying her face in her hands. She can feel the satin of her wedding dress brush against her legs as she does. That seems to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and the tears come quickly, spilling over her cheeks and ruining her wedding makeup.
Not that it matters. Maddie won’t be needing it.
He stands there as she weeps, almost as though he’s an unruly child laboring through a scolding by his mother. She can sense the way he awkwardly shifts in front of her like he’s waiting for permission to leave, but she doesn’t give it to him. This discomfort he brought him on himself. He can suffer through it. Eventually, however, the tears cease, and Maddie lifts her head. She uses her thumbs to swipe at the black smudges under her eyes before finally reaching down and taking off the ring. She places it down on the table next to her.
“Take it and get out.”
“Maddie—”
She doesn’t respond. She moves over to sit by the window and watches as Jason leaves, getting in a car idling in the driveway. As silence fills the room again, she watches what she thought was her future drive away.
