[#079] In the Lane, Snow is Glistenin' (Original)
Theme Prompt: #079 – First Snow
Title: In the Lane, Snow is Glistenin’
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 683
Summary: Gabe experiences his first New York snow.
“Nik.”
Marissa’s voice is soft as she leans over to whisper in his ear, but it’s still loud enough that he can hear it. Nik grumbles, reaching to pull a pillow over his head with a sigh. Once she recognizes his non-response as him choosing to ignore her, Marissa opts to take a slightly more aggressive approach by shoving his shoulder hard.
“Nik!”
“What?” he grumbles as he pulls his head out from under the pillow, looking up at his girlfriend with accusing eyes. As she opens her mouth to speak, the door to their bedroom bursts open, and a tiny redheaded child flies across the room to the balcony doors to declare:
“It’s snowing!!!”
Nik, the New York native, huffs as these two desert children deal with a situation they’ve never had to encounter once in their lives: a freshly fallen winter snow. “Yes.” He straightens into a sitting position, all thoughts of sleep abandoned for now. “It does that in New York in the winter.”
Gabe presses his face to the glass, watching as big fat flakes fall in the city around them. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Then he glances back to his mother, face bright with excitement. “Can we go out in it?”
Marissa makes a face. “I’d rather we didn’t?”
“Oh, c’mon,” Gabe sighs, his face immediately falling. “I wanna throw snowballs and build an igloo and build a snowman!”
“Gabe, we’re currently staying in a penthouse apartment on the thirtieth floor,” Marissa rightly points out. “Where are we going to do all of that?”
“The roof?”
Nik shakes his head. “That’s not a good idea in a storm like this, buddy. But in the interest of compromise, maybe I could take you to Central Park later when the wind calms down?”
“Yeah!” Gabe pumps a fist in the air as he looks over at his mom. “Can he?”
Marissa raises an eyebrow. “Do I have to come?”
Nik chuckles. “No. You can stay in and stay warm right where you are.”
“Good,” she sighs before reaching for her robe. “I’m going to go get some coffee to do just that.”
Nik shakes his head before flopping back against the bed. “Give me another hour, and I’m all yours, okay, bud?”
Gabe gives a sound in the affirmative as he dashes off again, letting the door close behind him with a slam. Nik sighs before closing his eyes and trying to grab some extra sleep.

Children from the local neighborhood cover the park by the time Nik and Gabe arrive, already stumbling through the snowdrifts with sleds and other winter activities. Gabe is practically vibrating, and Nik eagerly lets him loose, encouraging him to make friends with the kids and get into his trouble. In turn, Nik perches himself on a bench with a hot cup of coffee to keep warm; his eyes focused on the redheaded kid as he darts through the various activities.
A couple of hours later, Gabe returns, cold and wet, but his bright smile undimmed. Nik smiles in return. “Having fun, kiddo?”
“Yeah.” He plops on the bench next to him, snuggling up for warmth. “This was a blast. I wish it snowed in Las Vegas.”
“I’m sure your mother doesn’t,” Nik laughs before wrapping an arm around his shoulder. “But if you want to go a little closer to home, maybe I can take you skiing in Utah over the weekend sometime.”
“Will you teach me how to snowboard?”
“Yeah, sure,” he grins. “I’m not the best at it, but with your skateboarding skills, I’m sure you could figure it out.”
“Cool,” he grins before starting to shiver under the winter wind. “I’m getting cold, but can I do one more round with the snowballs before we go?”
Nik snorts before nodding his agreement. “Sure thing, kid. Knock yourself out.”
Gabe grins before running off into the snow to have some fun. He will probably have a massive cold later this week, but as far as Nik can see, he’ll likely deem it worth it.
