Summary: Henry and Lucius venture out into the snow to face a witchy foe.

“I hate everything.”

Lucius glances back over his shoulder as they march through the woods, turning his attention to his smaller counterpart behind him. Henry’s usually slim frame is bundled in coats, giving himself an exaggerated, top-heavy appearance. Lucius raises an eyebrow before smirking as he turns back to the road.

“Oh, come now. It’s not that bad.”

“Not that bad?” Henry sputters as though offended by the proposition. He glances around the snowy woods, waving his hands at the ice crystals forming on the heat of his breath. “It is below freezing, and you decide that that’s an opportune time to trek across a dark and likely dangerous forest.”

“It was the right time.”

“In this weather?” Henry lets his hands flop to the side. “I can’t feel my fingers!”

“Then you should have worn better gloves.”

Henry holds up his hands, showing the thick, clunky mittens he had grabbed for the journey. “How much better should they have been? Not all of us have the benefit of layers of muscle to keep us warm.”

“It’s not much farther, Henry. And for the record, you didn’t have to come.”

“Oh, yes, of course, I didn’t. I should have just let you run off to get yourself killed without offering my assistance. “

Lucius stops in the snow, allowing Henry to catch up with him before looking over at his friend. “I’m just saying. You didn’t have to.”

“You and I both know that’s a lie.” Henry huffs as he adjusts his gear, coming to a stop. “You may be a big, strong fighter, but we’re a team. We do this together. And after we resolve this mission, we’ll visit somewhere warm and tropical.”

Lucius smirks, patting his friend on the back as they start moving again. “Deal. I’m sure there’s a beach with our name on it somewhere.”

“That’s what I like to hear.” Henry falls in step next to him, eyes scanning the woods. “Do you think this witch is responsible for all the problems we think she is?”

Lucius shrugs. “Maybe, maybe not. I can’t make any promises either way. But we know she’s responsible for at least some of them. The least we could do is get her side of the story.”

Henry raises an eyebrow as he rubs his hands together to generate some warmth. “So this isn’t all about danger and killing, then?”

“You know how people can be. Once they find something they don’t understand, naturally it’s the cause of all their problems.”

“And sometimes they’re right.”

“Sometimes. But not always.” Lucius changes course as they reach a fork in the woods. “Time for us to find out which one is right.”

Henry takes a deep breath before nodding as he follows. “I truly do hope it’s you, my friend.”

Unfortunately, fate was not on Lucius’ side.

The witch turns out to be one of the bad ones, a hag of the highest degree. Given her propensity for freezing your heart in its place – both literally and figuratively – Henry is glad he had a fair amount of fire spells prepared.

He thought he would have to use them to keep himself warm. Turns out he needed them to melt the heart of this witch instead.

All the same, as they step away from the smoldering ruins of the hag’s hutch and Henry sighs. “Well. That could have gone better.”

“Probably,” Lucius sighs. “Also could have gone worse.”

Henry hums in agreement. “Small favors, I suppose.” He reaches over, draping an arm around his friend’s shoulders as they venture back to my inn. “So, true to my promise, what warm beach are we looking for trouble on next?”

“We will not be looking for trouble. We will be relaxing. Enjoying ourselves. Think of it as a vacation.”

“I’m not good at vacations.”

“No, I understand you always feel as though you need to punch something. But if you give it a good try, I think you might like it.”

Lucius considers before making a face and shaking his head. “I still think we’ll find things to punch anyway. I don’t know how these things happen. They seem to find me.”

Henry shakes his head. “And why fate has cursed me with your presence, I will never know.”

Lucius laughs. “Oh, come now, Henry. You have to have a little fun on our adventures, at least.”

Henry makes a face but refuses to admit it. Instead, he focuses his attention on where they’ll go next. “What about the Nimbus beaches? I hear they’re lovely this time of year.”

“We’ll see.” Lucius smiles, already planning the adventure in his mind. “We’ve got to get their first.”
