[#079] Memories of Snow (Pokémon XY)
Theme Prompt: #079, First snow
Title: Memories of Snow
Fandom: Pokémon XY
Rating/Warnings: PG13/no warnings
Bonus: No
Word Count: 993
Summary: Augustine brings Lysandre to Snowpoint.
The snow made a pleasing crunch underfoot as Augustine stepped away from Lysandre, spreading his arms as if to show off the region in which they found themselves.
"What do you think? Even Snowbelle can't compare to this...!"
Lysandre had to admit that the area made a definite impression, with its deep snowdrifts and dense evergreen forests. Their visit to Sinnoh had culminated in a trip to its northmost point, a place that Augustine had spoken of excitedly in the lead-up to their excursion.
"It is impressive. Certainly, I've known it second-hand, from books and television reports... and of your own words, of course. And now I am here myself, aware of what we lose by way of reducing experiences to words alone..."
Augustine shoved gloved hands into his pockets, smiling brightly. "Doesn't prepare you for how cold it is, right?"
"... That is, indeed, part of it."
At Augustine's prompting, the two of them had arrived at Snowpoint well-wrapped for the weather, to a point that Lysandre wondered might be somewhat excessive - but he had to admit that Augustine had been correct. Feeling the warmth that came from adequate insulation, Lysandre felt that he wouldn't have wanted to be wearing anything less.
"The first time I came here, Professor Rowan warned me of it. We'd agreed to meet at the city, and I suppose at the time I didn't really have much experience of how cold snow can really be...! I was, one could say, somewhat unprepared. I'd just thought, oh, we're going to the mountains, we'll work up a sweat doing that, right?... We had to put off our expedition by a day or two, sourcing me some proper cold-weather clothing. I'd worried he'd be angry with me." Caught by the memory, Augustine gave a lop-sided grin. "I suppose he was always quite lenient with me, though. Not that I'd have said that at the time...! He apologized, saying that he should have specified what I'd need. I apologized, saying I should have done my research. That was why we were there, after all - research! But, I was only a child - barely a teenager at that point. You can get away with those mistakes when you're young."
"Of course. It would have been rather unreasonable to be punished for something like that." Lysandre had been glancing around at the snow-tipped trees as he spoke, then surprised by the noise - and sensation - of an impact against his chest. Dispersed snow clung to him where the snowball had landed; he looked back towards Augustine, gleefully caught in the act of forming another. "... I trust you didn't behave like this with your Professor?"
"Are you kidding? I wouldn't have dared. But you don't have to be a kid to want to throw snowballs and build snowmen, right?" Augustine held up the snowball. "Now I'm old enough to get away with such things. ...You can throw them back, you know. It seems a bit unfair if I'm the only one."
"We're participating in a snowball fight now, are we?" Lysandre bent down to form one, then threw it lightly in Augustine's direction; laughing, he fended off the worst of it by holding up his arms.
"Well, not a fight, so to speak. Just, while we're here, maybe there are some things we can do that we can't back at home...!"
The snowfield was expansive, but the edge of Snowpoint was visible several hills away. "I hear there's a temple here."
"Right...! I think entry is restricted, though."
"You speak as if being a Pokémon Professor isn't enough to get you anywhere you might want to go...! I can hardly think that they'd refuse you if asked. Especially as a student of the esteemed Professor Rowan."
Augustine chuckled. "You might be right. Still, I think they keep it like that for a reason - icy caves are perilous to navigate, and the Pokémon within might be quite dangerous..."
"Is that not why we're here? A whistle-stop tour of Sinnoh, taking in its unique sights and investigating Pokémon that can't be found anywhere else...?"
"Well... on paper." Having made another snowball, Augustine instead threw it in the direction of a nearby tree; he hit a branch, causing snow to fall from it, but little else. "I don't know that I'm particularly in the mood for traveling to the depths of icy caverns, though."
"No? Then what, might I ask, are you in the mood for?"
Giving a shrug, Augustine spoke lightly. "Oh, you know. Isn't the best part of cold weather getting back in where it's warm? Striking up a fire, snuggling down for the night... hot chocolate, or perhaps something stronger... there's something romantic about it, don't you think? The chill of a snowy landscape, the warmth one can only feel from the touch of another person..." He turned to face Lysandre, giving an innocent smile. "Don't you think?"
"It might be that you've watched a few too many winter romance films..."
"A cliché is a cliché for a reason, isn't it? Are you telling me that you don't want to indulge, just a bit, while we're here...?"
"Now, now. I didn't say that."
"So, our itinerary for the rest of the day; to Lake Acuity, and perhaps to the temple... and then, once night falls, it might be that there's a particular chalet waiting for us..."
"You did your research, this time?"
"Absolutely! Only the best for our Sinnoh tour. I know how much you like your little luxuries, after all...!"
For as many sights as they'd seen, Lysandre couldn't help but think that the best part of their trip was just how excited Augustine got at the prospect of being able to introduce Lysandre to the things, places, and memories of his youth. Coupled with that was the knowledge of the memories they were in the process of making - those of Sinnoh, and those of their time spent together.
