[#096] Showtime (FAKE)

Theme Prompt: #096 – Centre Of Attention
Title: Showtime
Fandom: FAKE
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 1000
Summary: Still doing his job as bodyguard for Randy Lane, Dee considers the differences between his lover and the man Ryo becomes when he takes to the stage.

Some people enjoyed being in the spotlight while others avoided it like the plague. Personally, Dee could take it or leave it, although being a detective who was required on occasion to work dangerous undercover assignments, keeping a low profile was the wiser course of action.

Back when they’d met and gotten involved on that blissful Hawaiian vacation two years earlier, Dee would have confidently said that Ryo was the kind of guy who preferred to avoid drawing attention to himself. He’d seemed quiet, reserved, and vaguely embarrassed when people focused on him, which was why his profession came as such a surprise.

In his role as official police bodyguard for the world-famous country singer while he was in New York, Dee was seeing a whole other side to the man he was head over heels in love with. It was a little jarring at first, and yet Ryo was still the same man who’d spent those three incredible weeks in paradise with him.

As they pulled up outside the venue for Randy Lane’s first ever New York concert and slipped inside through the stage doors, Dee watched a change come over his lover. It was obvious that Ryo was raring to get out there in front of his adoring fans. With Dee at his shoulder, he made unerringly for his dressing room, which he’d already checked out earlier before helping his band get set up.

Dee had been there for that as well, watching Randy Lane’s road crew rigging the lighting and the sound system, running checks on everything. They’d been like a well-oiled machine, and Ryo had been right there in the middle of it, making suggestions and requests, assisting with the positioning of amplifiers, microphones, all the ephemera of a live performance.

While Ryo changed into his stage clothes, tight black jeans and black cowboy boots, teamed with a red Western-style shirt embroidered in black, and the ubiquitous black Stetson, Dee did his best to keep out of the way, although he couldn’t keep from staring admiringly.

“You really love this, don’t you? All the attention and the fans, I mean.”

Ryo paused in the middle of buttoning his shirt, considering the question, his head tipped to one side.

“Randy Lane does,” he admitted after a moment.

Dee snorted. “You ARE Randy Lane.”

That drew a chuckle from Ryo. “I am some of the time, when I’m performing or appearing in public. The rest of the time I’m just plain old Ryo Maclean, and then I prefer not to be noticed. I like that I can go out and about without being recognised. All I have to do is take the hat off and no one knows who I am. Best of both worlds.” He smiled wryly. “Of course, once people learn that we’re dating, all that will go out the window. There’s no way people won’t recognise me if I’m out with you, even without my hat. You kinda stand out in a crowd.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” Ryo leaned in close to kiss Dee lightly on the lips. “I wouldn’t change anything about you even if I could, although after tonight I’m not sure you’ll be able to say the same about me.”

“Already said I don’t care that you’re famous. Doesn’t change how I feel about you.”

Ryo finished buttoning his shirt and tucked it in, fastened his pants and belt, ran a comb through his hair and set his stage hat on his head; it was fancier than the one he’d been wearing earlier, with a turquoise and silver hatband. He checked his appearance in the mirror and grinned at Dee’s reflection.

“My lucky hat. I always wear this one on stage.”

“You look gorgeous.”

Predictably, Ryo blushed.

“Almost showtime.” Ryo did a few stretches and rolled his shoulders, easing out the kinks caused by nervous tension. “I’ll be fine once I’m out there; the few minutes right before I go on are the hard part. Walk with me to the wings? You can watch the show from there.”

“I’m your bodyguard; I go wherever you go. Except on stage.”

A knock came on the door. “Five minutes, Mr Lane.”

Ryo recognised the young woman’s voice, even though he’d only met her once. “Thanks, Trudy,” he called back.

Dee was impressed. Names, faces, voices; Ryo seemed to remember them all.

“You’re really something.”

“Hm?” Ryo glanced over his shoulder as he moved towards the door.

“Nothin’. Aren’t you forgettin’ your guitar?”

“I won’t need that one until the second half of the show.”

“Oh. Right.”

Taking position at Ryo’s shoulder, Dee followed him to the wings, peering through the curtains. The auditorium was packed.

“Okay, I guess this is it. Break a leg!”

Ryo laughed. “You’re supposed to say that to actors, not singers.”

“So what am I supposed to say?”

“Knock ‘em dead?”

“I’m a cop, not sure I should be encouragin’ that kind of behaviour,” Dee teased, grinning.

“Doofus. That’s my cue, see you later.”

With that, Ryo was gone, striding out onto the stage and launching into the first song, an up-tempo number that had the audience clapping along.

Dee stood silent, his eyes following his lover’s every move, and halfway through the song, he watched in lustful awe as Ryo sashayed and spun across the stage in a complicated step sequence, never putting a foot wrong as far as Dee could tell. It was astonishingly sexy; he never would have imagined Ryo could be so uninhibited in front of so many people, all of them applauding and roaring their approval. But that wasn’t his lover out there on stage, lapping up the attention of his fans, giving them everything he’d got. That was Randy Lane, CMA Entertainer of the Year, Grammy Award winning songwriter.

Randy Lane was only one part of the man Dee loved, there was a lot more to him that the rest of the world would never see. Dee decided he didn’t mind having to share.

The End

Stage presence takes a lot of effort! It's sweet that Ryo has Dee there to get to know the real him. (And I love their exchange about "break a leg" - what a cute way to work in the bonus prompt.)

Since this ended up becoming an amnesty week rather last-minute, I didn't want you to miss out on the banner you would have gotten if we'd done regular voting with two fills. So here's a quick one I put together after the roundup! Hope you enjoy. :)
