Summary: There was something about slipping the bonds of Earth that always made Will smile.

Dex didn't ask to be born different, much less practically scream his difference to anyone around just by entering a room. But his difference was something he'd learned to cope with, from the stares to the neverending questions.

Scientists had yet to figure out why people with red hair were born with supernatural abilities, but each time Dex slipped the bonds of gravity and floated along the treetops, he couldn't be bothered to care about the why. It was why he always dressed up as Superman for Halloween, proud of the big "S" on his chest. Sure there were times when he entertained the idea that psychokinesis or time manipulation would be extraordinary powers to have, but flying never failed to give him the freedom and privacy he preferred. Or, at least, he thought he preferred.

Until he met Nursey.

On the Taddie Tour when Dex first checked out Samwell, Derek Nurse had slung an arm over Dex's shoulders and didn't get bent out of shape when Dex shrugged him off. And sure, Nursey had been annoying at the beginning of their first year, peppering him with questions about his abilities, but then again, so had just about everyone else from the Samwell student body. Dex knew he had to expect it, attending college hundreds of miles from home. And once he'd gotten into his routine, he realized just how different Nursey was from everyone else. For starters, Nursey could read Dex better than just about anyone outside of Dex's family. As they grew closer, he challenged Dex's view of not just people but the world. It wasn't long before they'd become the best of friends. And after an awkward, fumbled kiss at a kegster, they'd become something more.

The thing about flying was that it was almost exclusively a solitary thing. Dex controlled it for the most part, though there were occasions when emotions took hold, and he had to take a back seat to his own abilities. Indeed, Dex and Nursey's first kiss had only broken when someone had grabbed Dex's ankle and hauled them from where they floated above the crowd. And each time they kissed, he enjoyed the floating feeling, even if sometimes it was only in his stomach.

Dex had been busy with classes and work when Nursey's birthday came up. Even though it was barely above freezing, he knew what his gift would be. So after bundling up, he walked up to the Haus and pulled Nursey from his homework. He zipped his boyfriend into his coat and walked them outside, holding Nursey's hand tightly. "Now, close your eyes," he said.

Nursey grinned, listening to Dex for once without balking as Dex pulled Nursey's green beanie down to cover his ears. Once their hands were once again linked, he leaned forward and kissed Nursey, the sense of floating overwhelming him as they slipped from the porch and hovered a few feet in the air.

It wasn't until they were pushed by the coldest of breezes that Nursey opened his eyes. "Chill," Nursey said, the biggest smile on his face.

"Happy birthday, Nurse," Dex said with a kiss.

They glided around the campus for a few minutes, Dex only letting go of Nursey's hand when they flew over Chowder and stole his knitted cap. As long as they maintained at least some contact, Nursey would stay aloft. Still, he never took anyone too high or flew too fast.

After hovering over Faber, Dex turned then back to the Haus when he heard something familiar. "Derek," he asked, not hiding his smirk, "what are you humming?"

Without missing a beat, Nursey belted out, "I can show you the world. Shining, shimmering, spleeeeendid!"

Alladin. Dex had hated that scene, with Alladin and Jasmine floating around on the magic carpet, mostly because as a child, people bugged him to recreate it. But somehow, with Nursey, it was different. Still, he squeezed Nursey's hand even as she shook his head fondly. "You know I can drop you on your ass," he said, absolutely no heat to his voice.

"But you won't, Dexyroo," Nursey replied, "because you love me."

Dex smiled, and as he eased them back onto solid ground, he pressed his forehead to Nursey's. "God help me," he said with one last kiss, "I do."
