Summary: Stiles investigates Derek’s new girlfriend.

Derek comes back to Beacon Hills with a blond. Scott and Stiles are immediately on the hunt for information. While it’s not his fault that most of Derek’s girlfriends have been psychopathic killers—as far as they’re aware, he’s got a fifty-fifty split—but it never hurts to be prepared, just in case his next girlfriend falls on the attempting to kill them all side of the camp.

But this Caroline, wherever she came from, is bright and bubbly, and eventually Scott falls off, insisting that someone with that much sunshine could never be evil. Stiles is unconvinced—evil comes in all shapes and forms—but when Scott refuses to continue to help, he continues investigating on his own. And since his dad won’t let him run a background check and Parrish is unavailable to help him go around him, he goes to the next best option.

Sliding in front of Cora, he drums his fingers against the table. “So. This guy your sister is seeing.”

“I’m not giving you blackmail on Caroline, Stiles.”

Stiles squints as a flock of crows rolls through the park. “I’m not looking for blackmail.”

“You’re looking for reasons to believe she’s evil. That’s pretty close to blackmail.”

…Okay, she has him there. He makes a show of scoffing as Lydia comes to sit next to them. “What are we talking about?”

“Stiles thinks Caroline is going to kill us in our sleep.”

“Oh. Well, she is a vampire. I suppose that’s not an unfair assumption.”

Stiles blinks rapidly as he snaps his attention to Lydia. “How did you know that? Did you sense it with your banshee-dar or something?”

“Yes. I can sense vampires from a mile away.” Lydia gives him a baleful look before shaking her. “No. I asked her, like a normal person.”

“And she just volunteered it?”

“I don’t think she’s really in a position where she hides it a lot from people like us. After all, she runs a school for supernatural kids.”

“Wait.” Stiles blinks. “What?”

Lydia laughs. “See how much information you get from just asking a person directly? When they have nothing to hide, they can be surprisingly candid.”

“Why didn’t Derek just tell us, then?”

The two girls give each other a look in return, before looking back at him, and all it takes is a second of intentional staring for him to get the message.

“Wait. He does this to me on purpose?”

“You have a tendency not to trust his judgement anyway, so he might as well make you figure it out on your own.” Cora shrugs. “Just saying.”

Stiles huffs before getting up from the table and going to deal with this problem head-on.

Stiles throws open the door to the loft and Caroline startles from where she’s perched on the couch, working on a laptop. She blinks in surprise before leaning forward and seeing who it is.

“Hi. It’s Stiles, right?”

“Yeah. Is Derek here?”

“No. That deputy that works for your dad came by and said they needed his help with something. He said he would be back in a couple of hours.” She gestures to the couch next to her. “You can wait if you want.”

“Actually, I wanted to talk to you.” He closes the door behind him, because good. Derek's not being around means there’s no one to glare at him when he asks the tough questions. “About your whole vampire thing.”

Caroline’s head tips to the side, eyes curious. “My whole vampire thing?”

“Yeah. Just wanted to check that you’re not doing something like mind-controlling him into getting to someone already here, or slowly draining him of his blood only to leave him behind like an empty fast food cup.”

Her eyebrows rise even higher, before answering matter-of-factly. “Compulsion doesn’t work on werewolves. Also, werewolf blood is gross. Hopefully, that sets your fears at ease.”

“So you have mind control powers?”

“I do, but I only use them sparingly, when I absolutely have to.” Caroline sets her laptop to the side as she watches him. “You can also prevent it with an herb called vervain—either wearing it or drinking it in your coffee. I’m sure your friend Deaton has some.”

“And you’re just telling me this?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” she raises an eyebrow. “I have no interest in manipulating you, but another vampire might. I would hate for someone to be using you to get to the rest of the pack. Since you’re the token human and all.”

“Oh.” He makes a face. “That’s good to know.”

“Good.” Caroline smirks. “So have I passed muster?”

“Maybe.” He’s still not one hundred percent convinced she’s not evil, but he’ll take the boons that she gave him for now. “I’ve still got my eye on you. And Derek.”

Caroline smiles. “You really care about him, don’t you?”

“Derek’s been messed with enough by the women in his life.” It really should stop.

“I get it. And I appreciate you looking out for him.” Caroline sighs as she gestures to the seat next to her. “And whatever question you want to ask, I’m here to answer?”

“Any question?”

“Whatever you want to know.”

“Should I get some of that vervain first just in case I ask one you don’t want me to know the answer to?”

She snorts. “Up to you.”

He pauses, just for a minute, before deciding to extend a brief show of trust himself. If Caroline really does claim to be looking out for Derek’s best interests, time to see if she’ll put her money where her mouth is.

“Alright. Let’s do it.”
