[#157] When You Feel So Tired but You Can't Sleep (Legacies)
Theme Prompt: #157—Quiet Night
Title: When You Feel So Tired but You Can’t Sleep
Fandom: Legacies
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 826
Summary: The Super Squad plots a way to get Hope to relax.
“She’s spiraling.”
Josie doesn’t have to say it out loud. She and the rest of the Super Squad know what it looks like when Hope is losing her grip on her ability to keep everyone safe. As much as her dogged determination to do everything alone always grates, they can’t fix that. They just need to make sure she doesn’t swing off the deep end.
“Obviously,” Kaleb sighs. “She’s been snapping at everyone over the age of thirteen for the past two days. What are we supposed to do about it?”
“Yeah—isn’t keeping Hope from self-destructing your and Lizzie’s job?” Jed points out and Josie rolls her eyes.
Lizzie makes a face. “You know, you guys claim to be her friends, too. Might be nice if you did some of the heavy lifting for a change.” Not that Lizzie is trying to pass it off on them necessarily, but Hope is a lot, and she and Josie are also a lot. Everyone has a lot they’re dealing with. Sometimes it’s nice if their weight gets spread around.
Jed and Kaleb look appropriately mollified at that, before a tiny voice speaks up next to them.
“I have an idea.”
All four of them turn to look at Pedro. He’s tapping at his tablet, before turning it to face them and letting the video play. Even Josie has to admit its kind of genius, if they can get the materials to pull it off.
“We’d have to ask Doctor Saltzman,” Pedro sighs. “He’ll probably say no.”
“Actually, I think I might have a way we can get around that.” They all turn to look at Jed. “Just trust me. I’ll text you the location. You guys get Hope there?”
Josie and Lizzie nod. “Yeah. Let’s do it.”

“What are we doing at an animal shelter?”
Hope stops just outside the door, not sure what to make of where the twins have taken her. Josie rests a hand on her back, continuing to nudge her forward so they don’t lose any momentum.
“We know you’ve been having a hard time with the way things have been going lately. You’ve been under a lot of stress.”
“So Pedro gave us this absolutely genius idea of how to make you feel better,” Lizzie grins. “Or at least, provide a distraction from the stress of our unique every day circumstances.”
Hope makes a face, but she allows the girls to keep pushing her forward. “What if something happens while we’re gone?”
“Then the rest of the squad can handle it.”
“Also, should I be concerned that we’re acting on the recommendations of an eight-year-old?”
“Don’t knock the genius of Pedro,” Lizzie smirks. “Just trust us? Please?”
Hope sighs and finally agrees, letting them lead her into the shelter and to a specific room, and she’s finally sitting down in a pen, surrounded by tiny purring kittens. Hope blinks in surprise, not sure what to make of it, but she can’t help but smile as one kitten climbs into her lap. And, like any other teenage girl, she melts.
“Are we sure that this isn’t a pen of demon kittens looking to devour our souls?” Hope asks, one hand coming up to brush against the top of the cat’s head.
“We checked. They are all one hundred percent normal kittens.”
“And if things really get out of control, Kaleb will call?”
“He will.”
“Okay.” Hope takes a breath, and Josie can see some of the relief coming off her shoulders. “Then I’ll stay.”
“Good,” Josie grins, before moving to settle next to her and pet a kitten of her own. Just because this is for Hope doesn’t mean they’re not allowed to share it.

A few hours later, the three girls leave the shelter, and everything feels calmer. Hope’s anxious energy has subsided some, and while the kittens have not solved all their problems, they’ve at least provided them with a moment of rest.
“Feel better?” Josie asks, and Hope nods.
“I needed that. Just … a minute to not think about everything that’s going wrong.”
“We know you put a lot on yourself,” Lizzie points out. “But as we keep trying to tell you, you’re not in this alone, Hope. You can take a break sometimes.”
“It feels like every time I try to, everything goes wrong.”
“I think that’s the anxiety talking,” Lizzie smirks before pulling her closer. “But will you at least trust us, your friends, to take care of you?”
Hope nods. “I will try to be better at that. Promise.”
“Good.” Josie smirks. “Ready to go home and see what the boys have been up to?”
Lizzie frowns. “Why, when you put it like that, does it worry me?”
Hope laughs as she shakes her head. “Come on. Can’t have been too much trouble.” And with that, they head back to the Salvatore School, rested and refreshed.
