Summary: Optimus makes an offer to Megatron

The building began to crumble, the shaking of the ground got more intense with every passing astro-second. Debris was falling down, the floors began to crack.

“Come with me if you want to live.” Optimus held out his servo, hoping that Megatron would reach for it, but his eternal opponent refused to reach for the helping servo. He made a step backwards, silently thankful that the wall of the room was still there, even it was already heavily damaged.

“I don’t need your help, Optimus.” Megatron made a dismissive movement with his servo, hoping that Optimus would now leave him alone. He didn’t needed his help to make his way out of the crumbling building. After all he knew this building better than Optimus and he didn’t wanted to show any weakness and be rescued from the noble Autobot leader. He would rather face the end of his existence in this building, which one had been Decepticon headquarter.

Optimus closed his optics, ex-vented and shook his head. Somehow he couldn’t leave his old nemesis and former friend behind. Not when he knew that it would be a sheer miracle if Megatron would make it out alive.
‘He knows this building better than you, so he knows where they safety ways are.’
Under different circumstances or on any other day this thought would have convinced Optimus enough to leave and find a way out of heavily damaged construction.

He had seen the fear flickering in Megatron’s optics and the moment of realization and Optimus was certain that he would never forget that expression. It was in that moment that he knew, that if he couldn’t convince Megatron to come with him or manage to drag him out of here, this would be the last time he would see him.

“That’s the wrong moment to be too proud to accept the help of your enemy”, Optimus raised his voice over the falling debris. “Would you accept the help of an old friend?” He made a large step forward and keeping his optics fixed on Megatron, who stood motionless with a blank expression on his face.

Astro-seconds of silence passed. Optimus tried to ignore the urgent need to leave, but he was aware that Megatron might had the intention to drag him with himself, when the building would finally collapse. Then he would have finally succeeded in destroying him, but he would have always met his end and therefore it was a success only for his successor, whoever that would be. ‘Not Starscream, that’s for sure’ Optimus thought.

“I don’t want your help nor do I need it.” Megatron shouted. He threw a last look at Optimus and ran over the remains of the floor and back into the labyrinth of corridors of the headquarter.
For a split astro-second Optimus’ first impulse was to follow him but he was aware that this wouldn’t be of any use. He turned his head away and began to search for the quickest way out.

‘Don’t be such a fool. As if you’ve seen the last of Megatron.’
How many times had he thought that he had seen him for the last time? This wasn’t the final meeting, that was something Optimus sensed, even part of him wished that it would be true, since he was longing for peace. Deep inside he knew, that he couldn’t endure an existence without him. Megatron was a constant part of his life therefore his absence wouldn’t make sense.

Optimus was finally reunited with the group of Autobots which had been involved in this mission, when the headquarter collapsed, shaking the ground for a short time.
Everyone turned around and their optics watched the smoke and dust rising high into the sky.
Should he wait here until he would see Megatron reappearing from the ruins?
Optimus was certain that he would come up with an excuse to wait or to go back to the ruins. But what if he would find what he secretly feared the most?

“Optimus? Is everything alright?” Ratchet asked worried, while he examined Optimus’ face from the side.
The Autobot leader heard himself saying that everything was alright, hoping that Ratchet wouldn’t hear that these words were a lie.
