[#174] You Got Your Head in the Clouds (The Umbrella Academy)

Theme Prompt: 174 - Rumor
Title: You Got Your Head in the Clouds
Fandom: The Umbrella Academy
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 662
Summary: Allison has the world at her fingertips. All she has to do is make a wish.

When Allison is five years-old, her father teaches her how to refine her powers. How to be specific about the rumors she delivers. How word choice is important to get specifically what you want.

She thinks it’s a game. She makes a wish and then it comes true. When using it in the field, she can almost be malicious about it.

I heard a rumor you shot your friend in the foot.

I heard a rumor you ran into a wall.

I heard a rumor you punched yourself in the face.
(That may be a Diego special.)

They’re bad guys after all (except Diego, who just gets on her nerves) and they don’t need to be merciful to them. She can be as mean as she wants, and often, she is. After all, she is the one to fear. Ben may turn into a literal monster, with tentacles and teeth, but Allison’s the one who can rob you of your own mind. They’re opposites that way. Ben can outwardly be a monster, but he is often the best of them, while Allison looks like the picture of innocence on the outside, but had a silver tongue and no conscience behind it.

She could be nice, but nice isn’t the same as good.

Ben dies and they all scatter. Allison makes a beeline for Hollywood, following the promises of attention and stardom. Center of attention that she is, she assumes she’ll be able to walk in the door and get whatever she wants, just as she always had. But after a few auditions, she realizes that if she wants something; she has to wish for it. Easy enough.

I heard a rumor you cast me for the part.

I heard a rumor you made me the lead.

I heard a rumor that you gave the film an excellent review.

The world is malleable to her making. She’s the superhero here. She’s the one with the power, and people will do what she wants. She doesn’t even think twice about it, because who is she hurting? Movies are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, of her father’s rantings against the end of the world. Who cares who gets what part?

People should be grateful she didn’t go for the real strings of power and just wanted to be famous instead.

It isn’t the first time she rumors her daughter. In a lot of ways, she isn’t prepared for the rigors of motherhood, because she doesn’t have a mother. She has a robot, who’s good at playing pretend. So Allison does the same. She plays pretend at being a mother but keeps her own secret weapon in her back pocket, just in case.

When she can’t get Claire to stop crying: I heard a rumor that you stopped crying.

When she gets into a fight with her husband about it: I heard a rumor that you forgot this fight.

When Claire is being a child, and she’s frustrated: I heard a rumor you were exhausted, and you wanted to go to sleep.

She wants the perfect family and the perfect marriage and she loves Claire so much the idea of being apart from her is like her heart being ripped out of her chest, but she doesn’t know how to go through life without making wishes and getting what she wants.

It’s that last rumor that’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back with Patrick, and in a lot of ways, she can’t blame him. If she were in his shoes, she can’t say that she wouldn’t have done the same. And as much as she knows, she could rumor him to make this all go away—maybe not to save her marriage, but at least to get her daughter back—she doesn’t.

She wants to prove, for once, that she has something that’s real. And she’ll do whatever it takes to get it.

Good character study. It must be hard to resist when it's so easy to rumor a little help every now and then.
