Theme Prompt: #186: Reputation
Title: And Maybe You're the BBEG (But You Don't Know How)
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh!
Rating/Warnings: T (Minor language, minor violence)
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 875
Summary: Ryou knows what his reputation is by now. He doesn't need the reminder. (Manga compliant)

Ryou comes to a halt in front of the game store, steeling his courage to go in for the first time in...how long has it been? A few weeks, he thinks, though the passage of time has been a bit tricky to measure ever since he started losing chunks of time and memory some years back. No matter; with his impending move to his own apartment and transfer to Domino High, he should at least go tell the store owner he won't be back anymore.

(It's for the best, really. With how things go every time he tries to indulge his hobby, the only thing he can do is just let it go altogether.)

Taking a deep breath as he pushes aside the thought of 'Someone will see you, people know who you are, you aren't welcome here', he steps into the cramped little store, keeping his head down as he navigates around displays of unpainted figures and plastic dice towards the tabletop modules and sourcebooks by sheer habit alone. Ryou knows he should just go find the store owner and explain that he's moving, but he can't help but eye the Monster World sourcebooks with longing for someone to play with. Quietly, so quietly, he slips a book off the shelf, opening it just enough to skim the pages inside without cracking the spine.

(No point in damaging something he has no intention of buying, after all.)

Ryou has never been known for good luck though, and he fails to notice that he's not alone in the little store anymore until a hand claps itself onto his shoulder and spins him around by force, bringing him face to face with-

"-Kano, I-" Ryou doesn't get to finish his sentence, as Kano shoves him up against the shelf behind him, glaring down at him as he cuts off any chance of escape.

"What are you doing here, Bakura? Looking for more victims?"

"No, I just-" Ryou's attempt at explaining himself turns into a strangled yelp as Kano shoves him again, his back colliding painfully against the shelf of books. It's all he can do to stare up at the older boy, the book he was skimming held to his chest like an improvised shield against being attacked.

However, Kano doesn't shove him again, instead yelling so that his voice can be heard booming around the whole store.

"My brother is in a coma because of you! Don't give me that shit about not knowing what happened, you were the one running that game and you're the only one still awake!"

"I-I'm sorry, I really don't know..." Ryou cries out, tears welling up as he recalls waking up to find his latest gaming group all comatose around the table, with no idea what happened to cause the comas

Just like how his previous group also went comatose.

And the one before that.

And the one before that. All comatose because of his tabletop gaming hobby.

Kano snarls, his face contorting with rage as he winds up to shove Ryou back again, only to freeze as a new voice rings out.

"What's going on here?" The store owner, a man in his thirties Ryou only knows as Mr. Ogawa, steps into view, staring at Kano and Ryou in confusion. Ryou takes the opportunity to frantically slip away from Kano, setting the book he was holding haphazardly on the stuffed shelf as he goes.

"I'm sorry Mr. Ogawa, but I'm moving to Domino City soon. I...I won't be coming back anymore." With that, he turns and flees the store, blinking tears out of his eyes as he bolts back out into the autumn sun without waiting for a response from either Mr. Ogawa or Kano. Ryou doesn't stop running until he's halfway home, and he only stops there because he physically can't run without wheezing for air anymore.

(Ryou never was built for this much physical exertion, he's too scrawny for extensive exercise and too pale for extensive sunlight. It's part of why he likes tabletops so much, he doesn't have to go outside and run around.

But then again, he thinks with a strangled sob, he can't play tabletops anymore, not without hurting others.)

"Why does this keep happening?" One hand comes up to his chest, fingers finding the outline of his Egyptian pendant hidden under his clothes as he struggles to breathe through his crying and exhaustion. "I don't mean to hurt anyone..."

And yet he somehow does, blanking out whatever happened during those games and only recalling the aftermath, left to deal with everyone else avoiding and shunning him as a bad omen or worse. It's why he has to move so much, to have even a shot at getting through his school days alright.

Now he has to move again, this time to Domino City.

Forcing back another sob, Ryou trudges his way home, already resigned to seeking out another clean start at another school.

(And within the golden pendant hidden under Ryou's shirt, unbeknownst to Ryou himself, the ancient spirit takes note of that interaction with Kano. Ryou is his landlord after all, the one person who was chosen to bear the Millennium Ring, and he'd like to keep his landlord happy.)
