Summary: Seeing her siblings again brings mixed results for Lily Mason

Lily Mason knew that her father and stepmother were hoping for a child of their own eventually and she found that she didn't mind. After all, the three of them were Lakewalkers and there was a good chance that any half-sibling of hers would develop powers that marked them as part of the wider Lakewalker community.

But if by some chance their powers were null, she would still care for them, Lily told herself firmly. She would.

Lily wouldn't make them feel like they were a strange burden that was starting to take up too much room.

The way Lily had felt with her mother in her previous home. She had been the first born, but her mother had given more smiles and attention to the boys that came one by one after her. Quick to believe Lily had been responsible for the terrible fire that had ended a brothers life, the barn and the house.

Lily had eventually found out why.

It had taken a while, but the family she had used to live with now had their new house and barn built. Taken a bit longer though for Lily to muster the courage to make a visit.

But she was nearly seventeen now and a patroller of Tent Mink. Taller and stronger, now that she had access to more food she more than earned. Other peoples emotions didn't bother her as much now.

Bringing furs as a gift would help sweeten things, Lily had hoped.

Fid, whom she still thought as father, had been quietly pleased to see her. Her mother though had blankly stared at her taller, patroller daughter before tightly smiling. Introducing her to her youngest child, a boy named Cabby.

A real smile had softened her mother's face at that point. All Lily could think then was how she had escaped being nursemaid to yet another sibling, with less food available to them all. Treated as trouble eventually by yet another family member.

But now Reeve, the oldest boy, was fascinated by her furs despite himself. Peppered her with questions, then asking her for stories of the river. Taking his lead, her younger brothers came forward with wary interest. Lily was still strange to her brothers, but more useful now.

It was a little victory, even though it was a hollow one. But Lily didn't need to have Lakewalker powers to guess that Reeve would hire himself to a riverboat once he was old enough, with some of the younger boys perhaps following his lead.

Her mother had figured this out as well, for she gave Lily a brief, furious glance as if to say, stop filling their heads. Another reason to be resented, Lily thought grimly.

She couldn't wait to get home.
