[#24 Amnesty] out of the proverbial storm into the fire (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)

Theme: Amnesty #24 - formerly Prompt #164 Rescue
Title: out of the proverbial storm into the fire
Fandom: Mario and Luigi RPGs - Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (Cackletta Is Not Killed Midgame AU + Fawful is a Witch Trainee AU)
Ratings/Warnings: Cackletta and Fawful's combined potty mouths and some mild violence gives this yet another PG-13. Also, has passing spoilers to the Joke's End arcs of both the regular game + the 3DS remake's side mode.
Word Count: exactly 999 words
Summary: Led by fragmented memories of the Beanstar backup plan, Fawful - a.k.a. Vincent - leaves Popple for Joke's End to repair his Headgear, and he is ultimately followed by Cackletta.
Author's Note: I'm back somewhat later than I planned to drop this part of my little Superstar Saga.. well, AU saga. I swear the next one is the last one, I promise.

Vincent hardly remembers all that much about the fall that caused him and Popple to meet.

Yet, the pulse of the supposed Beanstar in his memory (what memory) is what leads him away from his current master.

It is what leads him to fix the Headgear (when did I call it that) to fly to Joke’s End (who told me what it was called).

Squelching through the thick snow and ice, Vincent shivers as the cold, melting stuff seeps deep past his cloak through to his one piece jumpsuit, wishing he at least had a hat.

It will be worth it for her (who is this her).

Vincent eventually finds something far better than his ramshackle repairs, after what he estimates is an hour of walking. It is something he suddenly realizes is familiar.

“You w-were being in my eyes once,” he mutters to no one but himself, and he hides once he sees a few people walk by. Creatures is the descriptor most would use, and yet..

Something else flashes in his eyes.

Red and gold. A Goomba (what the underwhere is a Goomba) challenges him, somehow. His mother’s favorite coffee drink permeates the air between them (Momletta was there? Who is she?).

Vincent’s head throbs as he attempts to remember more things, recalling that the Goomba with a flag atop his head is a Captain. Self proclaimed, at that. Vincent tries not to be noticed as he overhears one of the other people speak.

“It was definitely somewhere around here.. I think.”

The small Bean glances over his shoulder to peer in through a window.. From the half hushed discussion he hears, he can hear them all talk about fixing the Koopa Cruiser.

That’s what it was called! The airship I fought on..

Vincent cringes at another sudden memory, gasping slightly at the ringing pain in his head.

The spray didn’t work.. (WHAT. FUCKING. SPRAY?!)

Captain Rinus had still managed to defy him despite the strength of the spray, despite the plume of purple colors.

He lost to Rinus, despite his efforts.

(Why should I fight against them?)

Vincent doesn’t realize someone else is present until he feels like he’s being lifted from his hiding spot, and he yelps fearfully as the delicate clawed hand grabs at the neck of his cloak. “WHAT THE FUCKINGS! BE LETTING ME GO AT ONCE!!”

The young woman Koopa squints at him with intense brown and red eyes, scowling at him.

“What’s with the F-bombs, Fawful? Your craphead of a witch mom isn’t here to save you, doofus!” Vincent wiggles angrily, trying and failing to reactivate his Headgear.

“My name is no longer being Fawful! I am being Vincent now! Let me go or I will be biting you like a hungry Piranha Plant!” He kicks fruitlessly at the Koopa, and he hears footsteps on the ice behind him, indicating the quartet of Captains from before have come back outside. As he swings around in the frigid air, he sees the Goomba at the head of the pack startle.

“Princess Wendy..??” Rinus asks, hopping in place. “What’s Fawful doing here? Is this why that witch is still running around?”

“That witch”.. Does he mean Cackletta? (WHO IS CACKLETTA WHO IS SHE WHO IS SHE)

Wendy abruptly drops Vincent a few moments later, when a crackle of electricity passes through both himself and the Koopa princess.

“I’m right HERE, losers!”

Vincent yells as he’s flung into the snow face first, the sparks agonizing compared to his concussion. Next thing he knows, he hears four more thundering impacts to account for the Captains, and he’s out of the snow again, grabbed in a considerably softer and swifter manner.

Vincent blinks a few times past the fogginess of his glasses, looking down..

Pink dress, purple cloak. Gold accents.

Bright, bloodshot eyes.

“M.. momletta?” Vincent dazedly checks, shivering. The witch, with one of her hands still very much sparking, steers whatever it is that she’s in and she hugs him tight. Vincent sees a gold ring of magic fly past, and he unconsciously clings to the taller Bean as the vehicle gets damaged.

“Hang on, Fawfie!”

Cackletta, Vincent guesses, pulls the strange steering wheel close by as tight as possible, causing the vehicle to fly maybe a bit too fast. Still, he does as he was asked, noticing a green, glowing item next to Cackletta’s heels, and it slides a little when the momentum hits.

“This is having a lack of safety!” he yells, squeezing his eyes shut.

“Fawfie, we just have to go!” Cackletta yells back, and more impacts batter the bottom of the round flying machine. Sparks dance across the floor seconds later, and one of Cackletta’s legs lifts only to angrily kick the now useless console. “Stupid green mustached- Fawful, honey, listen to me!”

She crouches down, and Vincent can feel the vehicle falling.

“I’m gonna try to cover you, but I really do mean it when I say hang on!”

Vincent dazedly nods and Cackletta wraps her long arms around him as half the scenery of Teehee Valley rushes past the two Beans. His stomach lurches as the glowing Beanstar is shoved hard into the back of his legs, and he counts only five more seconds before he’s jolted against the side of the vehicle. A few seconds more, and Vincent hears a voice as water rushes into the vehicle, having crashed into a body of water.

…Oh, Fawful.. I warned you.

Vincent - or Fawful, rather - closes his eyes, left without Cackletta to protect him. The Beanstar glitters as its tiny mouth moves further in the cold water.

This was a warning too.. You remember, right?
