[#24 Amnesty] the better choice (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)
Theme: Amnesty #24 - Formerly Prompt #077 Confession
Title: the better choice
Fandom: Mario & Luigi RPGs - Mario & Luigi: Superstsr Saga (Cackletta Is Not Killed Midgame AU + Fawful is a Witch Trainee AU)
Rating/Warning: Slightly engages in the "it was a dream"/"it was an alt timeline" thing in reference to the direct last entry I posted. Also, spoilers for the Woohoo Hooniversity segment of Superstar Saga once again.
Word Count: exactly 998 words
Summary: Fawful returns from his amnesiac state, and tells Cackletta what he saw. The witch acts, for the first time since adopting Fawful, for good and not for evil.
Author's Note: The finale of my four part story for Fandom Weekly! Apologies for the big length of the collection, I took the last week to finish up the whole thing. Hopefully this was enjoyable to read throughout this Amnesty!

I said.. careful what you wish for, little Bean.
Fawful’s eyes snap open as the cold water feeling vanishes. He’s back in the Hooniversity, his memory intact, Cackletta right before she was supposed to press the button. Right before he had even dared to speak.
“What was that being?”
Cackletta blinks, frowning. “Fawfie, what’s wrong?”
Fawful trembles, putting his gauntlet hand to his (surprisingly unbruised) face in confusion and mild dizziness from the memory of falling off into the Beanbean Moat. “Great Momletta, we aren’t being.. crashed?”
“...No?” Cackletta tilts her head, her hand still on the remote, her thumb still ready to wake the Peach Bots.. “Your gauntlet started acting up when you were trying to wish on the Beanstar though.”
He looks back at the Beanstar with uncertainty as he holds up his gauntlet hand, and then back at his mother, whose horns flop downwards in befuddlement.
Fawful looks down at his hands and back at the scene, whining pleadingly, “I don’t have understanding.. None of that was being real?”
The Beanstar doesn’t respond to his query, simply floating there asleep, and yet the scene practically gives the seven year old Bean hives at the thought of his previous wish and the blast of magic. The faint feeling that Vincent had existed for a few short days in his mind. Cackletta hadn’t died or crashed Bowser’s Koopa Car, sure, but everything had gone sideways with the Peach-Bots the second he tried to wish.
Cackletta sighs and puts up the remote where it used to be in her dress pockets, looking worried. “Ah stars.. Are you okay, Fawfie? Why the cold feet?”
“Great Momletta, I.. think the Beanstar was attempting to dissuade Fawful from wishing. I was seeing things go really wrong even with the aroundworking!” Fawful trembles still, hugging himself under his cloak with anxiety from what he saw. “I think something is being bad with the plan.. Plus with the mustaches we will be suffering further losses..”
“...You don’t wanna do this anymore?” she finally asks, her face turning from confusion to a soft, sad look Fawful hasn’t seen since the time she admitted he was adopted by her. “If the Beanstar showed you the future.. Are you afraid of the future?”
Fawful feels tears well up behind his glasses, and ashamed, he looks away, lowering his faintly aching head, quietly humming a “Mhmm” at first before explaining himself.
“Fawful has hesitance, Great Momletta.. It is feeling cold like a shame sherbet..”
The witch sighs softly, then she crouches down to meet Fawful’s eyes, putting her clawed hands on the smaller Bean’s shoulders.
“...I’m really sorry, Fawfie dear. If I’d have known you were against this, I shouldn’t have gone through with it. Maybe that’s what the Beanstar tried to understand.”
“But.. We are being this far..” Fawful sobs, his voice getting ever so squeakier. He distantly hears Mario and Luigi entering through the Sun Door just ahead, but Cackletta doesn’t appear to care, staying put where she is like the comforting force of nature she can be.
“No buts, Fawfie. I’m not going through with this any longer.” Cackletta huffs, scooting so the Mario Bros can’t see Fawful sobbing like a baby Bean pod, now hugging instead of just holding. “Sure, I still believe Queen Bean to be a putz, but.. I can really tell this is bothering you, and I’m really sorry I didn’t ask you sooner.”
Luigi nervously butts in from behind Cackletta’s back, adjusting his hat, and Fawful can kinda see this from his view.
“Um.. Is Fawful okay? Why is he-a crying like that?”
Cackletta growls slightly, and gently hefts Fawful into her arms completely, glaring at Luigi and Mario with motherly rage.
“None of your Stars-damn business, Greenie. I give up!”
Luigi and Mario’s expressions both change to that of shock, fantastically resembling Fawful’s favorite character from some lawyer game he got recently before the plan.
Edgeworth looked like that.
“You heard me,” Cackletta growls, snapping her right fingers. The Peach-Bots explode with her lightning magic, and after she crushes the remote belonging to the robots, she slides the remote’s remains over to the Mario Bros. “I said I give up! If that pompous Bean of a prince is here like I suspect, I’m waiting for him to arrest me! All I ask is not to die!”
Fawful mumbles, too teary to make coherent words in his current stupor.
Cackletta begins rocking the emotionally exhausted Fawful in her long arms, and despite himself, Fawful begins to feel just as actually tired. Somehow he feels Peasley is close as he begins to drift off..
–
Mario and Luigi both feel very baffled, and Peasley looks about the same when he enters the laboratory, lowering his sword.
“...Er…”
Cackletta stares at Peasley. The blonde, purple-eyed prince stares at her in return.
Peasley sighs, takes out some handcuffs, and handcuffs Cackletta in such a way that she still holds Fawful, who at this point has fallen asleep, his chest falling and rising faintly under his cloak. “Come on then, villain. If you really want to turn yourself in, that is.”
She gets up and follows Peasley out of the Hooniversity like nothing ever happened, while Luigi behind her carries the Beanstar. Peasley asks a question as he flies on his winged Bean slower than usual to accommodate the trail of people following him.
“Florence, why did you give up so easily?”
“The punkass our dumb country has for a national artifact scared my son,” she growls, her horns still lowered in irritation, and her expression lessens back to regret. “..But maybe his wish is why I ain’t dead. So I gave up.”
The Beanish prince turns away again. “And now you must answer to Her Majesty in court. And Mr. Gerakobittsu once he wakes up.”
“Whatever,” the witch argues, rolling her eyes.
The group marches on back to the castle in this fashion, just like that. The Beanstar glitters knowingly in Luigi’s arms..
