Challenge 041:
DOWN FOR THE COUNT
(idiom.) 1. Having been, or very near to being, defeated, ruined, or overcome. 2. Likened to a boxer who has been knocked to the mat and cannot get to his or her feet before the referee counts to 10, thus losing the match.

It's a phrase often remarked about other people, but rarely about ourselves. It's always easier to be objective about failure, or at least imminent failure, when it's not personal. Someone or something 'down for the count' could be in business, health, an organization or even an opinion. And does it really mean that something has passed a point where recovery isn't an option any longer? Write a story where something/someone is considered 'down for the count'.

BONUS GOAL: Ten Count

If your submission references boxing, or any physical blow that results in a knockout, that entry will earn an extra point to be tallied during voting!

Challenge ends Monday, May 15th at 9:00PM EST
• Post your submission as a new entry using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 041 - down for the count
• If you have questions about this challenge, please ask them here

Great selection for our 6 entries this week!

List of entries )

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. For your vote to qualify, you must fill out your entire voting card (all three spots) in order to be counted. First place votes are worth 3 points, second place votes are worth two points, and third place votes are worth one point. Meeting the bonus goal on an entry gets an extra point for that submission.

When voting, please copy/paste the ENTRY NUMBER and the FIC TITLE from the list above into the spot you're voting for (this prevents accidentally mis-numbering a vote and casting it for the wrong entry). It should look like this:

First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Second Place: 88. Another Fic Title
Third Place: 47. Finally a third fic title goes here

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. You do not have to be a member of the community in order to vote, nor have submitted an entry for this week; everyone is welcome to participate in the voting. IP addresses are logged to prevent duplicate voting.

Voting closes Wednesday, May 10th, at 9:00PM EST.

Challenge 040:
QUICK AND DIRTY
There are right and proper ways to do something... and then there are the get it done by any means necessary methods. Both have their place, but the latter tend to be favoured by people more in the moment, where time and function take precedence over due diligence. Write a story where something is accomplished by a quick and dirty method rather than the "right" way of doing it.

BONUS GOAL: Skinny Mini!

If your submission is less than 500 words, that entry will earn an extra point to be tallied during voting!
