Challenge 240:
FUTURE
n. a time that is to come

What do your characters think about the future? Maybe by our standards they already live in the future – traveling through space, or living on a very different Earth thanks to technology we haven’t developed yet – but they probably still have some idea of what they want things to look like, “someday”.

Do they have hopes and dreams for that future? Have they been in survival mode so long it’s hard to imagine? Or has it never really occurred to them, because they like to live in the moment? If you asked them about their dream future, what would they say?

Write a story about someone’s future.

BONUS GOAL: Shining Stars

If your submission features the stars, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, November 18 at 9:00PM EST. Please note that this will be a two-week challenge.

Challenge 239:
AUTUMN NIGHTS
The leaves are falling, the days are getting shorter, and the weather’s turning cooler. Maybe it’s starting to rain more, or maybe it’s clear blue skies followed by freezing nights; maybe it’s time for corn mazes, or apple or pumpkin harvests. For some people, maybe it’s the best time of year to stay indoors with hot chocolate and a good book; other people might prefer a brisk hike followed by a bonfire. Depending where you live, maybe it’s the time of year for costumes and candy!

How do your characters spend their autumn nights? Do they enjoy autumn, or would they prefer any other season?

Write a story about autumn nights.

BONUS GOAL: Trick or Treat!

If your submission features Halloween (or a local equivalent), it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 238:
APPLE PICKING
In most places where apples grow, it’s a traditional part of autumn: harvesting the apples! Whether it’s a community effort to bring in the harvest, a family tradition of going to the apple orchard to pick a few on the weekend, or a temporary job, someone needs to pick the apples.

But that’s hardly universal. Maybe space apples get picked in spring, or maybe your fantasy world’s apple trees only produce apples once every three years. Have your characters ever gone apple-picking? Do they enjoy it? Is it a beloved family tradition, a job, or something they’ve never even thought about?

Write a story about apple picking.

BONUS GOAL: Man’s Best Friend

If your submission features a dog, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 237:
HANGOVER
n. disagreeable physical effects following heavy consumption of alcohol or the use of drugs; a letdown following great excitement or excess

A fun night out drinking with long-lost friends, an all-nighter with endless cups of coffee, the biggest concert of your life or the most exciting six hours you can remember. Everything went great, you slept for hours, and now…

…now you’re feeling absolutely miserable.

Most of us have had a hangover from something – too much coffee, too much alcohol, or the post-excitement crash. But how would your characters handle it? Do they power through? Curl up in a ball and plead with someone to bring them tea and painkillers? Maybe they don’t get hangovers at all, and wonder what all of the fuss is about.

Write a story about a hangover.

BONUS GOAL: “I’m fine! I’m…not fine.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 236:
COLD SNAP
n. a brief period of very cold weather

Did winter arrive a few weeks early? Maybe an unexpected storm brought a cold front with it, or some other kind of mysterious weather phenomenon is bringing the temperatures down. Maybe it’s natural, or supernatural, or maybe there’s no apparent explanation; it’s just freezing cold.

How do your characters handle it? Do they hole up at home until it warms up, or try to figure out what caused the cold? Were they caught out in the cold, traveling or camping, or were they prepared for it? Are they upset about it? Indifferent? Happy?

Write a story about a cold snap.

BONUS GOAL: Grey Clouds With Silver Linings

If your submission features silver (the color or the metal), it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 235:
MAGIC
Is it real, or just a magician’s trick? Something to play with at parties, or a powerful force you shouldn’t mess with? Something anyone can learn, or a secret known only to a few? Whatever it is, it’s magic! Whether it’s a feature of everyday life or something reserved for secret quests and world-saving, a magician’s sleight-of-hand or something far more real, things are always just a little more interesting with some magic.

Write a story about magic.

BONUS GOAL: A Magician’s Best Friend

If your submission features rabbits, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 234:
COMFORT
A hug, a hot bath, a nice bed, a weekend off – whatever form it takes, sometimes everybody just needs a little comfort.

Maybe it’s been a bad day, or a bad week, or a bad year. Maybe your protagonists are sick, or injured, or just tired. Do they need a friend, family member, or partner to come spend some time with them? Do they need a quiet evening by themselves? A blanket and some soup, a mug of hot cocoa and a crackling fire, or a day at the beach?

And how do they feel about comfort? Do they seek it out whenever they feel like it, or does it take some work to get them to admit they might need a hug?

Write a story about comfort.

BONUS GOAL: Hot Chocolate Fixes Everything

If your submission features hot drinks (tailored to your characters’ preferences), it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 233:
CURSE
prayer or invocation for harm or injury; a profane or obscene oath or word; a cause of great harm or misfortune; torment

Plenty of protagonists have a good reason to think they’ve been cursed somehow – no matter what they do, things keep going wrong for them (in, of course, story-worthy ways). Sometimes the curse is literal – a spell cast by some magical being they’ve offended, or something passed down their family line. Other times there’s no magical force acting on them, but it sure feels like there is! Can they do anything about it? Can they break the curse, literal or metaphorical? Or is it something they’ll just have to live with?

Write a story about a curse.

BONUS GOAL: “Tell him I said ‘hi’, okay? Oh, and ‘screw you’.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 232:
COFFEE SHOP
It’s the classic starting point for a romantic encounter – two characters meet over a cup of coffee, and the rest, as they say, is history.

But all kinds of things can happen in a coffee shop! Maybe your characters worked at a coffee shop in college, or in an alternate universe, and they’re just trying to get through the day. Maybe the local coffee shop is the secret resistance meeting place, because who’d suspect such an innocent-looking location? Maybe it’s where your characters go to get some time alone, or the first place they stumble into after an all-night adventure. Or maybe the coffee shop itself is a little more than meets the eye…

Write a story about a coffee shop.

BONUS GOAL: “I might need something stronger than coffee.”

Challenge 231:
MYSTERY
A murder? A theft? A lost artifact, a missing pet, a strange map? Maybe it’s a dark and stormy night, or a sunny afternoon after school, or a blizzard so intense everyone is trapped in the house together; whatever the situation, your characters have a mystery on their hands.

Do they band together to solve the case, or start suspecting each other? Maybe they go it alone, or call a trusted friend. Maybe they swore off mystery-solving last week, but it found them anyway. Maybe they have another goal entirely, and just found the mystery along the way.

Write a story about a mystery.

Challenge 230:
STARGAZING
It’s a nice, clear night, without too much artificial light; what better way to spend it than a little stargazing?

Maybe it’s a romantic evening – or at least, one your characters might hope will become romantic, given the opportunity. Or maybe it’s been a long, exhausting day, and your characters don’t have the energy to do anything except stare up at the stars. Maybe there’s something wrong with the stars – your characters are on the wrong side of the world, or on another planet entirely, with none of their familiar constellations to navigate by.

Write a story about stargazing.

BONUS GOAL: “Well, gold star for effort.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 229:
OPTIMISM
Maybe the sun will come out tomorrow!

Some people are just upbeat. No matter how bad things get, they’ll always see the bright side and expect the best. Pouring rain? Well, the plants need it. Car breakdown? That’s okay, there’s a mechanic’s right down the road, they can probably fix it. Alien invasion? Come on, team, we’ve got this!

Sometimes, a little bit of optimism is just what everyone needs. When our heroes are in their darkest moment, maybe they need a friend to tell them that it’s not over, they can still win this fight if they just keep going. Other characters, though, might find it frustrating; they don’t want to hear about what might go right, when it seems like everything is going wrong.

Where do your characters fall? Are they optimists, or not so much? How do they feel about it?

Write a story about optimism.

BONUS GOAL: Sunny Day

If your submission features sunshine, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 228:
DEITY
What does it mean to be a god?

There’s a lot of different ways for characters to relate to gods, or the concept thereof. Maybe they’ve followed the same faith their whole life, or maybe they don’t believe in gods at all; maybe they’ve actually met their gods, or maybe by some definitions they are gods.

How do they feel about that? Are they comfortable with what they believe? Do they like their gods? Hate them? Hang out with them?

Write a story about a deity.

BONUS GOAL: “Don’t believe everything you read.”

Challenge 227:
SPONTANEOUS
n. arising from a momentary impulse; acting or activated without deliberation

Sometimes it’s better not to plan things in advance. Sure, there’s something to be said for a meticulous itinerary, but that can be stifling, boring, or even dangerous for someone who needs to avoid being too predictable. If you don’t make a plan at all, things might go sideways or very, very wrong, but they won’t be boring!

Are our characters spontaneous, or do they want a little more planning? How do they handle it when they don’t have the chance to plan, or when someone else does something impulsive?

Write a story about doing something spontaneous.

BONUS GOAL: “I knew this was going to happen, and here I am anyway.”

Challenge 226:
SECRET
Everyone’s got a few things they don’t want anyone else to know.

Maybe it’s something relatively small – they’re afraid of moths, they haven’t vacuumed their apartment in six months, they don’t actually like strawberries. Or maybe it’s something far more important – a secret identity, a fake name, a crime they’ve spent years trying to cover up. Whatever it is, it’s important enough to hide it from everyone else.

What secrets do your characters have? What lengths would they go to to keep them? Does someone else have a secret they’re trying to find out?

Write a story about a secret.

BONUS GOAL: “That’s a lot of effort for something so small.”

Challenge 225:
ALIBI
n. having been elsewhere at the time a crime was committed

From the cat who was definitely snoozing in the sun when that water glass was knocked over, to the murder suspect looking for the right receipt to prove he was all the way across town when it happened or the superhero quickly coming up with a reason his civilian identity’s never been seen in the same room, alibis come in all shapes and sizes! But sometimes it can be hard to find one – especially if you did whatever it is you’re being accused of.

Have your characters ever needed an alibi? Did they have one? What was it for? Did things work out okay for them, or not so much?

Write a story about an alibi.

BONUS GOAL: “You got yourself into this, you get yourself out of it.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 224:
GUILT
n. a feeling of deserving blame for offenses

Deserved or not, guilt is a difficult emotion to deal with. It’s not easy to make up for something you did; it’s even harder to make up for something you didn’t do, or had no choice about, or don’t even remember but feel guilty about anyway.

What do your characters feel guilty about, and how do they deal with it? Can they get past it, or are they going to carry that guilt forever? Can they make up for what they did, or didn’t do?

Write a story about guilt.

Challenge 223:
SUNRISE
Every night comes to an end eventually.

Maybe it’s a gentle sunrise after a classic dark and stormy night, a sign of hope for tired travelers who’ve been anxiously waiting for the dawn. Maybe it’s too bright, harsh light forcing anyone who doesn’t want to be seen into hiding. Or maybe it’s just a regular morning, with the alarm clock going off way too early and the cat demanding food because hey, look, you’re up!

Do your characters look forward to the sunrise? Enjoy watching it? Or do they dread it, because of the light or because that’s just too early to be awake?

Write a story about sunrise.
